The Blasket Islands are situated south of Dunmore Head / Dingle. Great Blasket is the largest and has been a home land for a lot of families during many centuries. The famous fisherman and writer Tomás Ó Criomhthain tells about life and death on the islands in his autobiography "An tOileánach" (The Island Man). He is buried onshore at the cemetery of Dún Chaoin (Dingle peninsula).
In the first half of the 20th century the population dwindled continuously and 1954 the last families were relocated to settlements on the Dingle peninsula.
